Interview with 2 goal striker Kyah in Woman Soccer World Cup

QUAKERS Hill striker Kyah Simon was the 2 goal hero for the Australia women’s soccer team this morning as the Matildas defeated Norway 2-1 in its final Group D fixture at the World Cup in Germany.

The goals in the 57th & 87th minute, in front of 18,474 fans in Leverkusen, powered the Aussies into the quarter finals. Australia finished 2nd in the section & its next opponent will be Group C winner Sweden on Sunday night.

Before the match Simon, a former Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star, answered questions from us. The report is below.

QUAKERS Hill star Kyah Simon is soaking up the heady atmosphere at the women’s soccer World Cup in Germany.

She took time out of her heavy schedule to answer questions from the Rouse Hill Times (RHT) about her experience, the expectations of her team & what she misses most from her home town.

Kyah, 20, said, ``We’ve got the ability to do well in this tournament, it’s just a matter of going out there game by game by playing the football that we can play & finishing our chances to secure results.’’

RHT: You said before leaving Sydney, the Matildas can win the World Cup. Are you still confident having seen & played against some of the opposition?
KYAH: ``I do not think anything is out of our reach, we are just taking it game by game & focusing on the next task at hand.’‘

RHT: What are the things impressing you most at the World Cup, like the best teams in your opinion, & the atmosphere at the venues?
KYAH: ``The atmosphere in the stadiums is amazing & something that I have never experienced before in my career. I could not have asked for my first World Cup to have been in a better country. They are really passionate about football here & are just as passionate about the women’s game which has really impressed me. Germany & the USA seem to be dominating their groups.’‘

RHT: Is women’s soccer attracting a big following in Germany?
KYAH: ``That is an understatement the whole country is getting behind it. It is no secret why they are so successful when you see the support they get from everything, from fans to sponsorship. ``The amount of coverage & advertising we have seen for the German team has been overwhelming.’‘

RHT: Whats the best thing about being at the World Cup in Germany?
KYAH: ``Experiencing my dream of competing in a World Cup & the support that we have received over here has made the experience all the better & the German crowds have really shown a fondness to our team which has shone through at the matches & really drives us on.’‘

RHT: What do you miss from Quakers Hill & NSW the most?
KYAH: ``Well my family is all over here supporting me but I do not like the thought of my pregnant sister at home so I guess she is someone I really miss. Dad also supporting me from back home & following my every step through Skype, email & watching all the games & looking for me in the press back home.’’

1st commercial recording from audio by 123 year old doll

A twelve second recording of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' from the 1st ever talking doll could also be the 1st ever commercial recording, experts have said.

The recently recovered recording, captured on a ring shaped cylinder phonograph, was produced for Thomas Edison's failed talking doll business venture in 1888.

The recording eventually found its way to Jerry Fabris, museum curator of the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, who thought that the hopelessly bent, 123 year old artifact was condemned to eternal muteness.

Then, a few years ago, Fabris saw engineer Carl Haber give a presentation on a new 3D scanning technology for old records at a conference.

Fabris brought the tin recording, long since separated from the rest of the doll, to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where on May 11 Haber and another scientist successfully reproduced the audio.

”That was really exciting,” Fabris said, of 'arguably the first commercial recording, the earliest documented example of anyone hiring someone to make records, to perform on records that would then be sold.'

Fabris was quoted by CNN, “I was hoping to hear Edison, but I was happy to hear any kind of voice.”

Patrick Feaster, a historian of the early phonograph, added that the recording has 'a number of different significances.'

Feaster said, “This was the very first case of a professional recording for an audience before it had really been done only for the novelty. This is the first instance of someone doing it to earn some money, and that's a pretty big 1st. It gives us a better understanding of the nature of the technical development of recorded sound; with this recording of the toy doll we have a much better sense of what these recordings sounded like.”

Fabris added that the recording marks a key moment in the history of early sound technology.

Science Channel Captures the Event with New Special : Space Shuttle

If you are afraid you are going to miss NASA’s final space shuttle launch on Friday, Discovery’s Science Channel has you covered. The cable network is cutting together Last Shuttle: Our Journey, which will air that evening at 10 p.m. and include footage from that day’s launch and interviews with the crew.

Science Channel’s GM Debbie Myers tells, "When we knew the shuttle program was coming to an end, it was important to us to figure out what was the best way to tell this story and honor the men and women behind this program, So we decided to make it personal, and tell the compelling stories of the people who touched the program and worked on the final launch."

The network’s cameras will be locked on to the space shuttle Atlantis, NASA’s last planned space shuttle to be launched, when it takes off and then editors will be on hand to quickly cut the footage into the special before it airs that evening.

If NASA cancels the launch for weather conditions or operational reasons, the Science Channel is prepared to postpone the special for when it actually launches.

'Comedy Central Roast' signs by Charlie Sheen

In what could be the worst idea in a history of bad ideas, Charlie Sheen has signed up for a Comedy Central Roast and told the network absolutely nothing is off limits.

For the kind of skewering that is more recently been saved for the likes of Donald Trump, Joan Rivers and David Hasselhoff, Charlie Sheen is officially set to be the next roaster in a new special, the network announced Tuesday.

"The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen," taping on Saturday, Sept. ten, in Los Angeles, will feature the nation's top comedians taking aim at the major headline making star.

"You could say I have been providing kindling for this Roast for a while," said Charlie Sheen. "It's time to light it up. It's going to be epic."

Comedy Central original programming head Kent Alterman said, "Charlie has assured us that nothing will be off limits in this Roast... which scares even us."

The only thing scarier would have been if they tried to pass off his "Violent Torpedo of Truth" as a stand-up comedy special. "The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen" will air on Monday, Sept. 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

In First Half BMW Widens U.S. Luxury Vehicle Sales Lead as Lexus Tumbles

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW)’s BMW brand outsold Daimler AG (DAI)’s Mercedes-Benz last month, expanding its lead as the top-selling luxury auto brand in the U.S. so far this year.

BMW’s U.S. sales, helped by deliveries of the new 5 Series sedan and sport-utility vehicles, rose 13% last month to 21,637 compared with a year earlier, the Munich-based automaker said yesterday in a statement.

Mercedes sales rose 13% percent to 20,652 in June while deliveries by Toyota Motor Corp. (7203)’s Lexus fell 38% percent to 10,773, as the Japanese make lacked inventory following the March 11 earthquake that disrupted manufacturing.

After six months of sales, BMW looks poised to outsell Lexus in the U.S. for a calendar year for the first time since 1997. BMW’s sales through June rose 13% to 113,705. Deliveries of Stuttgart, Germany-based Mercedes vehicles rose 7% to 110,926 in the U.S. while Lexus’s fell 18% to 88,010. Lexus has been the top-selling luxury auto brand in the U.S. on an annual basis for the past 11 years.

“They’re too far behind now to catch up,” Jim O’Donnell, head of BMW’s U.S. operations, said yesterday of Lexus in a telephone interview.

Last year, Toyota finished 9,216 sales ahead of BMW to be the top selling luxury brand in the U.S. for the 11th straight year. Mercedes finished in third place. The results exclude Daimler’s Sprinter vans and Smart cars and BMW’s Mini brand, which aren’t luxury vehicles.

German Duel

The German brands have duked it out for years in the U.S. market. BMW has outsold Mercedes since 2001. The narrowest lead came in 1997 when BMW delivered 202 more vehicles than Mercedes did, according to researcher Autodata Corp.

“There is very good momentum” for BMW, said Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst with Truecar.com, a Santa Monica, California based website that tracks automotive sales. “I don’t know if Benz will be able to catch up.”

O’Donnell expects the brand’s sales to increase 12.5% this year, helped by a redesigned 5 Series sedan and X3 sport-utility vehicle, he said.

BMW’s sales in the second half of the year will benefit from the introduction of another all-wheel-drive version of the 5 Series, the 528i xDrive, he said.

O’Donnell said, “That used to account for 25% of our 5 Series sales, so that will be a big lift for us in the last quarter.”

New Mercedes

Mercedes deliveries last month were helped by the redesigned E-Class, sales of which rose 19%, and M-Class, up 45%, the company said.

An updated version of the C-Class will be introduced in September further boosting sales, Ernst Lieb, head of Mercedes’s U.S. unit, said yesterday in a telephone interview.

“We get full availability really in the last quarter and we think it’s going to be really good sales for us,” he said.

General Motors Co. (GM)’s Cadillac luxury brand sales fell 7.9% last month to 10,860, according to the Detroit based automaker. It was the second time this year that more Cadillacs were sold in the U.S. than Lexus vehicles.

BMW and Mercedes will probably be aggressive with incentives in coming months, Kurt McNeil, Cadillac’s vice president of sales, said.

“They’ll get real creative,” he said yesterday in a telephone interview.

Lacking Adventure

Beyond Toyota’s production problems, Lexus may be struggling to attract affluent shoppers whose tastes have shifted following the recession toward brands that express creativity and originality, said Andrew Sacks, president of the Affluence Collaborative, a market-research firm based in New York City.

Lexus “is very middle of the road, it’s kind of bland, it’s safe,” he said yesterday in a telephone interview. “It’s still hard to justify what’s still a good bit of money that’s not a thrilling adventure.”

U.S. deliveries of Volkswagen AG (VOW)’s Audi brand rose 17% to 10,051 vehicles last month, the Wolfsburg; Germany based company said in a statement.

Porsche SE, the Stuttgart-based automaker merging with Volkswagen, sold 2,546 vehicles in the U.S., a 19% increase, the company said yesterday in an e-mail.

Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti sold almost 6,300 vehicles, a 24% decline from a year earlier, the Yokohama, Japan based company said in a statement.

Honda Motor Co., based in Tokyo, said in a statement that sales for its Acura brand fell 20% to 8,708 last month.

Ford Motor Co. (F) sold 7,361 Lincoln luxury vehicles in June, a 17% increase from a year earlier, according to a statement from the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker.

Land Rover deliveries rose 13% to 3,152, while Jaguar sales fell 14% to 1,389, Mumbai-based Tata Motors Ltd. (TTMT) said in an e-mailed statement.

A cup of Coffee

Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee seeds, called coffee beans, of the coffee plant. Coffee beans are found in coffee cherries, which grow on trees in over 70 countries, cultivated primarily in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. 'Green Unfrosted' coffee is one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world Coffee can have a stimulating effect on humans due to its caffeine content. It is one of the most-consumed beverages in the world

Coffee has played a crucial role in many societies. The energizing effect of the coffee bean plant is thought to have been discovered in the northeast region of Ethiopia, and the cultivation of coffee first expanded in the Arab world. The earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking appears in the middle of the Fiftieth century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen in southern Arabia. From the Muslim world, coffee spread to Italy, then to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia, and to the Americas. In East Africa and Yemen, it was used in religious ceremonies. As a result, the Ethiopian Church banned its secular consumption, a ban in effect until the reign of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. It was banned in Ottoman Turkey during the Seventieth century for political reasons, and was associated with rebellious political activities in Europe.

Coffee berries, which contain the coffee seed, or "bean", are produced by several species of small evergreen bush of the genus Coffee. The two most commonly grown are the highly regarded Coffee Arabica, and the 'Robusta' form of the hardier Coffee canephor a. The latter is resistant to the devastating coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix). Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried. The seeds are then roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. They are then ground and brewed to create coffee. Coffee can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways.

An important export commodity, coffee was the top agricultural export for twelve countries in 2004, and it was the world's seventh-largest legal agricultural export by value in 2005. Some controversy is associated with coffee cultivation and its impact on the environment. Many studies have examined the relationship between coffee consumption and certain health conditions; whether the overall effects of coffee are ultimately positive or negative has been widely disputed. The method of brewing coffee has been found to be important to its health effects.

The 'perilous moment' for Europe : Lord Brittan.

The former vice president of the European Commissioner, Lord Brittan, has said there is a real possibility that Greece could withdraw from the single currency if it cannot get its financial crisis under control.

The Greek prime minister has narrowly won a vote of confidence in Parliament, but Member of Parliaments are there need to approve further austerity measures to secure a 2nd emergency loan from the International Monetary Fund, in order to avoid defaulting on debt payments. Lord Brittan said this was a "very perilous moment" for Europe.

"It is not impossible that Greece could exit the euro zone if it doesn’t implement the measures it is now committed to," he told Today presenter Evan Davis.

"I think that's a very real possibility. Everything depends on whether it does implement the measures, and of course legislating is one thing, actually implementing is another, and the history is not a happy one. But I think its all depend on whether the crisis is appreciated in Greece, and it is realized, first of all, how serious it is. It is in everyone's interest that Greece should do what people have asked Greece to do for a very long time, which is to put its finances in order."

Lord Brittan's comments come after the US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner called upon euro zone countries to speak with a single voice on Greece's debt crisis.

"They've got a complicated set of institutions," he told a conference in Washington. "But they have to agree on a strategy, and on that clarity, for people on the markets to understand what the basic plan is."

Cancer Death Rate is the gap of widens based on education

The gap of in cancer death rates between college graduates and those who only went to high school is widening, the American Cancer Society reported Friday.

Among men, the least educated died of cancer at rates more than two 1/2 times that of men with college degrees, the latest data show. In the early 1990s, they died at two times the rate of most-educated men.

For women, the numbers are not as complete but suggest a widening gap also. The data, from 2007, compared people between the ages of 25 and 64.

People with college degrees are seeing a significant drop in cancer death rates, while people who have spent less time in school are seeing more modest improvement or sometimes none at all, explained Elizabeth Ward, who oversees research done by the cancer society.

The cancer society’s estimate, there will be nearly 1.6 million new cancer cases in the United States this year, and 571,950 deaths. It also notes that overall cancer death rates have been dropping since the early 1990s, but the decline has been greater for some groups more than others.

Experts believe that the differences have to do with education, how much people earn and where they live, among other factors. Researchers like to use education as a measuring stick because death certificates include that information’s.

Ward said, "Just because we're measuring education doesn't mean we think education is the direct reason" for the differences among population groups.

That said, the cancer death rate connection to education is striking.

For all types of cancer among men, there were about 56 deaths per 100,000 for those with at least sixteen years of education compared to 148 deaths per 100,000 for those with no more than twelve years of school.

For women, the rate was 59 per 100,000 for the most educated, and 119 per 100,000 for the least educated.

The gap was most striking when it comes to lung cancer.

People with a high school education or less died at a rate four to five times higher than those with at least 4 years of college education, the new report said.

More than a third of premature cancer deaths could have been avoided if everyone had a college degree, cancer society officials estimated.

Studies have suggested that less educated people are more likely to do risky things with their health.

They are more likely to smoke, drink and overeat, leading to obesity. All those things raise the risk for various cancers.

As for survival after diagnosis, the least-educated are often poor people without good health insurance. Studies have found that people with no health insurance are more likely to be diagnosed when their cancer is advanced stage, and they are also less likely to receive standard treatment.

Some Great Father’s Day gift idea.

On Dad’s Day, it seems that dads just want to chill out and relax – maybe be a couch potato watching sports on TV or a beach bum sprawled out in the sand. Perhaps a round of golf is his goal or a few sets of tennis. Whatever way he wants to spend his special day, there are terrific choices for special gifts guaranteed to please him.

Some gift for Dad’s Day

Strengthen His Golf Game:

You may never understand why he gets up at the crack of dawn to hit that little ball around the course, but you love him anyway. Golf smith has all the essentials for a golf-loving dad, and you can still get a much appreciated gift without knowing a lot about the sport.

General Manager Brad Choppering thinks the most popular gifts are the more basic ones.
"Easy Dad’s Day gifts are golf balls, shirts or gift cards," he said. "If you know certain things, you can move onto the golf clubs."

So why does dad enjoy the game? According to Choppering, there are many reasons.
"You get to spend time with your friends and spend time outside," he said. "Also, men always enjoy a challenge and trying to master something. You can never really master golf, so it's always a good challenge."

Just don't be around him when his ball makes a beeline for the water ... again.

Keep in Happy, and Caffeinated:

Instead of watching Dad re-heat that same cup of Folgers all day, get him some quality whole-bean coffee from Caribou Coffee so he can sip in style. Caribou offers a variety of coffee, so check with Mom to see if he prefers a lighter or darker roast. Caribou also sells mugs and tumblers. A Twins tumbler and a bag of beans is the perfect gift for a dad-on-the-go.
Currently, Caribou Coffee is running a Dad’s Day promotion: If you spend $30 on dad, you get a coupon for a free medium drink for yourself.

A great bonus that helps you keep Dad happy and get yourself an iced mocha as a reward.

Beers and Bowling:

Dads need their "Me Time," too. Treat him to a night out with the guys, or pick up the tab on a game with just the two of you at Lariat Lanes. In addition to league nights, Lariat Lanes offers open bowling and great food - so Dad won't leave hungry.

Gift certificates are available in any amount and can be used for anything at Lariat Lanes. So if you feel like popping for a round of beer, too, you can do that with the certificate. Manager Brandi James thinks a gift card will give your dad a much-needed chance to get out of the house, as she witnesses with some of the league bowlers.

"A lot of it has to do with getting away from the wives and children for a night," she said. "It's their night out [and] it's fun to socialize with other men, too."

Computer Care:

Everyone has a computer these days; even people who aren't quite ready for the 21st century. This may include your dad. The worst part is, he'll still think he can fix it when things go haywire. To avoid a headache, get Dad a package from Chip Heads that he can use to prevent computer viruses and future expletives.

Chip Heads manager Chuck Whitney notices that a lot of men first try to fix things on their own.

Formally dropped criminal charges against bin Laden

The United States has formally dropped criminal charges against former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who was killed in a U.S. military raid in Pakistan last month, formally ending a case against the slain al-Qaida leader that began with hopes of seeing him brought to justice in a civilian court.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan approved a request made by federal prosecutors to dismiss the charges — a procedural move that's routine when defendants under indictment die.

In federal court in Manhattan on Friday, prosecutors disposed of a 1998 indictment that charged bin Laden with murder and conspiracy to kill Americans for his role in attacking U.S. embassies in East Africa in 1998. The indictment also alleged that bin Laden tried to attack U.S. defense assets.

The indictment was later revised to charge bin Laden in the dual bombings of two American embassies in East Africa that killed 224 on Aug. 7, 1998, and in the suicide attack on the USS Cole in 2000. None of the charges involved the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Also named as a defendant was Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian eye doctor and longtime bin Laden deputy who has become al-Qaida's new leader.

Typically, court indictments are dismissed when the defendant dies or is convicted on other unrelated cases. Such requests to drop charges are procedural and routine. Pending federal criminal indictments remain against other top al Qaeda officials and their associates.

The charges included conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against U.S. nationals and conspiracy to damage and destroy U.S. property.

Around the time the charges were first filed, the CIA's bin Laden unit was pursuing a plan to use Afghan operatives to capture bin Laden and hand him over for trial either in the United States or in an Arab country, according to the 9/11 Commission. Bin Laden evaded capture for more than a decade until May 2, when he was killed during a Navy SEALs raid of his compound in Pakistan.

The court papers filed Friday included a declaration by a Justice Department official detailing the DNA, facial recognition and other evidence confirming bin Laden's identity.

"The possibility of a mistaken identification is approximately one in 11.8 quadrillion," the official wrote.

The document also makes a passing reference to a "significant quantity" of terrorist network material recovered during the raid, including "correspondence between Osama bin Laden and other senior al-Qaida leaders that concerns a range of al-Qaida issues."

Pakistany intelligence Arrest CIA Informants Who Led U.S. to Usama Bin Laden

WASHINGTON -- Pakistan's intelligence service has arrested the owner of a safe house rented to the CIA to observe Usama bin Laden's compound before the U.S. raid that killed the Al Qaeda leader, as well as a "handful" of other Pakistanis, a U.S. official said late Tuesday.

In Pakistan, a Western official confirmed a New York Times report that five of the Pakistani informants who fed information to the CIA before the May 2 bin Laden raid were arrested by Pakistan's top military spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, known as ISI.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters.

The Times, in an article posted on its website late Tuesday, said the detained informants included a Pakistani army major who officials said copied the license plates of cars visiting bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad in the weeks before the raid.

The fate of the CIA informants who were arrested was unclear, but American officials told the newspaper that CIA Director Leon Panetta raised the issue when he visited Islamabad last week to meet with Pakistani military and intelligence officers.

In Islamabad, an ISI spokesman, who customarily speaks anonymously, declined to comment.

U.S.-Pakistani relations have been strained over the raid by Navy SEALs on Pakistani territory, which was a blow to Pakistan's military, and other issues. Officials said the arrests of the informants was just the latest evidence of the fractured relationship between the two nations.

The Times said that at a closed briefing last week, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee asked Michael Morell, the deputy CIA director, to rate Pakistan's cooperation with the United States on counterterrorism operations, on a scale of 1 to 10.

"Three," Morell replied, according to officials familiar with the exchange, the newspaper said.

American officials speaking to the Times cautioned that Morell's comment was a snapshot of the current relationship and did not represent the Obama administration's overall assessment.

"We have a strong relationship with our Pakistani counterparts and work through issues when they arise," Marie Harf, a CIA spokeswoman, told the newspaper. "Director Panetta had productive meetings last week in Islamabad. It's a crucial partnership, and we will continue to work together in the fight against Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups who threaten our country and theirs."

Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, said in an interview with the Times that the CIA and the Pakistani spy agency "are working out mutually agreeable terms for their cooperation in fighting the menace of terrorism. It is not appropriate for us to get into the details at this stage."

US warning for Philippines: Issues of terror-related travel

U.S. citizens should "exercise extreme caution" when traveling to the Philippines, the U.S. State Department said Tuesday in a statement.

"Targeted sites may be public gathering places including, but not limited to, airports, shopping malls, conference centers, and other public venues," said the statement.

The warning, which is an update from November, specifies the island of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago as particularly dangerous and at great risk of harboring terrorist activity. Manila might also be included, the statement said.

Because of election-related violence, the Philippine government declared a state of emergency in November 2009 for the Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat provinces, as well as Cotabato City in Mindanao. This state of emergency is still in effect, according to the State Department.

Travelers should be aware of heightened police and military presence in these areas and of kidnap-for-ransom gangs that are active in the Philippines and target foreigners, the department said.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Mindanao is a predominantly Muslim autonomous region, set up in the 1990s to quell armed uprisings by people seeking an independent Muslim homeland in the Philippines, a predominantly Christian country.

In November 2009 at least 57 people were killed when their convoy was ambushed in Maguindanao. The former mayor of the province was accused of plotting the deaths to thwart a political rival.

The State Department issued a worldwide caution to warn U.S. citizens that terrorism can happen anywhere and urges those visiting the Philippines to register with the U.S. Embassy to be notified of emergencies, the statement said.

Rising Flag sales, but its not on Flag Day

The flags come to the Windsor American Legion post showing the effects of years of wind and weather. Sometimes, they have damage from wars.

“We get them in all stages, from faded to torn and tattered,” said Cmdr. Jim Cummings.

The Windsor American Legion Post No. 109, 624 Ash St., on Saturday hosted its annual flag retirement ceremony. The Windsor Legion and Cmdr. Dan Barrera have been hosting the ceremony for more than 17 years. Today is Flag Day.

“We usually do the ceremony close to Flag Day, which is June 14,” Barrera said.

This year, they expect to retire more than 100 flags from people all over northern Colorado.

“We mostly retire United States flags, but people will bring Colorado flags, as well as other state flags,” Barrera said. “Every flag should be retired properly, which is why we do all flags.”

He said the correct way to retire a flag is to burn it.

“I hate to burn flags and use that word, but when we retire them, that’s what we have to do,” Barrera said.

Before the flags are retired, Cummings reads a verse about the flags. After that, the group uses sticks to hold the flags over the fire until they are completely burned. While many flags that come to the legion are in disrepair, flags that are still seen as serviceable are saved and used again by the Legion.

Mitt Romney has ever been the sanest motherfucker on a stage: Michele Bachmann

If you watched last night’s insipid GOP debate in New Hampshire, you probably knew what you were gonna see going in: a bunch of rich white people (and the Godfather’s Pizza guy) patting each other on the back, taking potshots at the President, and pulling glittering hypotheticals about the economy, healthcare, and even the space program. The event also marked the first time in his life that Mitt Romney has ever been the sanest motherfucker on a stage.

But amidst the drunken, patriotic circle jerk, you may have heard a shrill chirping emanating from somewhere behind one participant’s hollow, glassy eyes and puppety mouth-hole. If you thought it was some Lovecraftian sprite, chattering in a fell tongue understood only by those who have bathed in madness, you’re pretty close: It was actually insane Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann announcing her candidacy for President of the United States in the 2012 election.

Although she said on The Early Show this morning that she would be “making a formal announcement soon,” it seems like saying that you’re running for President on CNN and then again on CBS 12 hours later is pretty formal, and one could distinctly hear the rattling of chains and the crumbling of tombstones as she spoke.

Between T-Paw’s movie trailers and Mee-Baw’s general horror-show way of being, Minnesotans will have plenty of opportunities to be mortified this campaign season. But we’ll cope with it the way we always do: with shrugs and creative, campaign-themed drinking games.

Syrian town is under control of the Syrian Military

The Syrian military is in complete control of Jisr al-Shugur after entering the northwestern city over the weekend, a network of human rights activists said Monday.

The network -- the Local Coordination Committees of Syria -- reported no new explosions, casualties or detentions in the community since Sunday evening, although it did say that Syrian soliders were searching house-to-house.

At least three people were killed in clashes Sunday, state media reported. One Syrian soldier was killed and four other soldiers injured in the fighting, Syrian state television reported Sunday. The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said two gunmen were killed and "many others" were arrested.

State television said Sunday that military units had entered Jisr al-Shugur to "cleanse the national hospital from the elements of the armed gangs after disabling the explosives and the various TNT devices that these gangs planted on the bridges and roads."

Accounts from the Syrian government have sharply contrasted with reports from residents, who say there are no "armed gangs" in Jisr al-Shugur.

State TV also said Sunday that authorities in the town had found a mass grave containing decapitated and mutilated bodies of members of security forces killed by "armed gangs."

President Bashar al-Assad's regime has consistently blamed armed gangs for the bloodshed. But activists and protesters say security forces have caused the violence.

In a statement released Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned Syria's force against civilians and expressed particular concern about violence in Jisr al-Shugur.

"The Syrian authorities have an obligation to protect their people and respect their rights. The use of military force against civilians is unacceptable," the U.N. statement said.

Many have fled "the Syrian government's military offensive" in Jisr al-Shugur, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement condemning the violence Sunday. In an earlier interview, he called on the U.N. Security Council to take a stand.

"I do believe it is time for the Security Council to make a clear statement of the kind that we're advocating calling on the Syrian Government to respond to legitimate grievances, to release prisoners of conscience, to open up access to the Internet and to cooperate with the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights," he told Sky News Sunday.

He said he had been trying to garner support from countries represented on the council, but noted that the prospects of passing a resolution were "on a knife edge" -- particularly since U.N. Security Council member Lebanon is a close ally of Syria.

"Close interconnections between the Lebanese government and the Syrian government have made it impossible for Lebanon to take a clear position on this," he told Sky News.

CNN has been unable to independently confirm accounts of the unrest in Syria, as it has not been granted access to the country by the Syrian government.

On Friday, Syrian troops came to the entrances of Jisr al-Shugur in an operation "to restore security and tranquility to the area which was being terrorized by armed terrorist groups," SANA reported.

The Syrian government announced it would push into Jisr al-Shugur after it accused "armed groups" of killing at least 120 security forces there several days ago.

SANA on Sunday also reported that one police officer was killed and another was injured in clashes with "an armed terrorist group" in Idlib province Friday. The government news agency said Syria's army arrested "terrorist groups and snipers" there Saturday.

Police and gunmen also clashed Friday in Homs province, SANA said.

Syrian refugees who fled to Turkey have said some Syrian soldiers rebelled after being ordered to fire on unarmed protesters and instead started fighting among themselves.

The number of Syrians escaping to Turkey has escalated to 4,300, a Turkish official news agency reported over the weekend.

A fourth refugee camp was set up Sunday in Hamza Cisligi, about 100 meters (109 yards) from the Syrian border in Turkey, to take in Syrians who have fled the regime's crackdown.

Halit Cevik, the Turkish foreign ministry's deputy-undersecretary for the Middle East, told the Anadolu news agency Saturday that Turkey has made preparations for more refugees.

Amnesty International said last week it believes more than 1,100 people -- including 82 children -- have been killed in Syria since the crackdown started in mid-March.

Army move displaced await next for Jisr al-Shughour in Syria

Hundreds of Syrians have been massing on the northern border with Turkey, preparing to cross over if the army advances further into the area after seizing the town of Jisr al-Shughour.

Syrian military sources have told the BBC the army plans to move on the nearby town of Maarat al-Numan.

It says it is pursuing armed men who escaped the weekend offensive. State media said there was heavy fighting.

Turkey has already taken in thousands of refugees from northern Syria.

The government said it was trying to restore order after 120 security personnel were killed in Jisr al-Shughour last week.

Residents say they died after a mutiny and fighting between security forces.

Syria has prevented most foreign journalists from entering the country, making it difficult to independently verify reports from there.

Continue reading the main story Watching and waiting.

The BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones, who is on the Turkish side of the border with Syria, says more than 5,000 refugees have registered with officials.

However, another 5,000 have entered the country unofficially, he says, while hundreds more are massed at the border, waiting for the army's next move.

Many of them are reluctant to abandon their vehicles or livestock, our correspondent says, and will only cross if the army advances into the area. Others are waiting for relatives.

Human rights activists and residents said troops began bombarding Jisr al-Shughour early on Sunday.

Helicopter gunships were also seen hovering overhead.

But speaking to the BBC, an army general denied any shelling. The troops were only after those responsible for the killings of security personnel earlier this week, the general insisted.

The army has now taken control of the area.

A BBC Arabic correspondent embedded with the Syrian military says tanks and armoured vehicles have taken up positions inside the town. Buildings still bear the marks of clashes, and wheat fields have been burned.

Still from Syrian TV of what it described as mass grave (credit: AFP/HO/Syrian TV) Syrian TV showed images of what it described as a mass grave in Jisr al-Shughour

However, state media report that only two "armed members of terrorist gangs" were killed in the offensive, while the army says one soldier was killed and four wounded.

A military spokesman told our Arabic correspondent that armed men from Jisr al-Shughour who fled to Maarat al-Numan would be dealt with in a military operation in the next few days.

Separately, the bodies of 10 security personnel were recovered from a mass grave. Correspondents who witnessed the exhumation said four had been beheaded, and most of the bodies were riddled with bullet wounds.

There are continuing but unverifiable reports of army defections, with the latest saying an officer and 50 men had changed sides rather than fire on civilians in Jisr al-Shughour.

'Forced to flee'

US officials say the crackdown has created a humanitarian crisis, and called for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be given access to Syria.

"No-one is aware of the real magnitude of the problem and this is a big issue, because it does not allow us to know the size of the problem and then to act accordingly," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan told the BBC.

On the Turkish side, two camps are already full of refugees and a third is filling up rapidly.

"The situation is grim. People were forced to flee with a few possessions. We are relying on the Turkish authorities for everything," Mohammed, one of those in the border area, told the BBC.

"No-one knows when it will be safe to return to our homes. When we return, people expect to find their homes destroyed and bodies unburied."

Protests against President Assad, who succeeded his father Hafez in 2000, began in mid-March and have spread across the country.

Human rights groups say more than 1,200 people have been killed in the crackdown.

Giffords show smiling her new photos.

The first photographs of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head in January show the congresswoman smiling. Gabrielle Giffords were released early Sunday by her office, her hair shorn short but few other telling signs of her gunshot wound to the head.

Taken outside, the photos show her with short hair and wearing glasses. One photo shows her alone, smiling at the camera; in the other, she is sitting alongside another woman.

This photos, taken May 17 outside her Houston hospital, are the first clear snapshots of Giffords since the shooting five months ago during a constituent meet-and-greet in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson.

May 17 was also the day after Giffords, D-Arizona, attended the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour. Her husband Mark Kelly was commander of the mission.

"It was very inspiring to see how much she had recovered in 4 1/2 months," photographer P.K. Weis of SouthwestPhotoBank.com said in a statement. "I was excited to see her and to see her smile. She was glad to see me, was in a good mood, smiling and laughing and seemed to enjoy the experience. I certainly did, too."

The photos showed how far she has come since she was wounded in the left side of her forehead, but her spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, has cautioned that Giffords still has a long way to go in her recovery.

They show the congresswoman outside, the greenery of the hospital lawn in the background. She smiled directly into the camera in one, while in the other she smiled downward as she sat next to her mother, Gloria Giffords.

Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords.

Carusone said Friday that Giffords could be released sometime this month.

She said doctors and family are considering "many factors" while making the critical next-step decision to release Giffords from TIRR Memorial Hermann, the hospital where she has been undergoing intensive daily rehabilitation since late January.

"We're looking at before the end of the month. We're looking at early July," Carusone said. "We don't have a date."

But in an interview published this week in the Arizona Republic, Carusone made clear that Giffords remains a shadow of her former self as she has difficulty stringing together sentences and relies heavily on gestures and facial expressions to communicate. She also faces some difficulty in expressing bigger, more complex thoughts, Carusone said.

While Giffords' release from the hospital after five months of intensive inpatient therapy will mark an important step in her recovery, she still must undergo months of outpatient rehabilitation that will include speech, occupational and physical therapy.

Since the shooting, the only time the public has gotten a glimpse of Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage, taken from afar, showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walk up the airplane's stairs.

The newly released photos, shot by Tucson photographer P.K. Weis just before surgery on her skull, provide a much clearer image.

Last month as Kelly was orbiting Earth, doctors repaired Giffords' skull, finally freeing her from wearing a cumbersome protective helmet that her staff members say she hated.

Since the shooting, Giffords has made remarkable strides, requesting her favorite foods, singing her favorite songs, and relearning how to walk and talk, although she struggles to string sentences together.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic published Thursday, Giffords' Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said Giffords' limited speaking ability has led her to rely primarily on facial expressions and hand gestures to communicate.

"She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing," Carusone said. "Add it all together and she's able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that's where she's had the trouble."

Carusone also said that if Giffords' recovery were to plateau now, "it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before."

"All that we can hope for is that she won't plateau today and that she'll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here," she said.

Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting and is being held at a Missouri facility. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors hope his competency can be restored so he can answer for the charges.

Hunger strikers Issue Statement Day 3 - Iraqi and Afghan hunger-strikers appeal for help

A group of 37 Iraqi and Afghan detainees on hunger strike in Campsfield immigration prison in the UK have appealed for support from human rights groups in their battle against deportation .

Campsfield IRC hunger strike Day 3: Hunger strikers Issue Statement

[ The Home Office have confirmed that a number of detainees are refusing food in Campsfield IRC ]

Press Release from IFIR with Close Campsfield additions

37 Iraqi and Afghan detainees on hunger strike in Campsfield immigration prison have issued a statement and appealed for support from human rights groups. 23 Iraqi and 14 Afghan migrants in Camps field, Oxford shire, have been refusing food since Tuesday.

'We are 23 Iraqi and 14 Afghan detainees being held at Campsfield House. The British Government want to send us back to Iraq and Afghanistan. it is not a safe place'.

According to media reports and evidence collected by the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees, many of those who have been deported to Iraq in the past are now living in hiding, in fear of the persecution they originally left Iraq to flee. Some have been assassinated. Others have committed suicide only days after being deported or have been kidnapped and killed, while others have had mental breakdowns. Many more have had to leave the country and become refugees again.

'The British government invaded and occupied both Iraq and Afghanistan, forcing millions of people to leave their homes', says Dashty Jamal, Secretary of the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR). 'With this policy of detention and deportation, they are continuing to destroy the lives of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan people'.
In recent weeks, many Iraqis have been detained apparently in preparation for another mass deportation flight to Baghdad. Across Europe, thousands of Iraqi and Afghan people have been detained and forcibly returned in recent years. IFIR has been campaigning against this policy. IFIR demands that the Iraqi government stops accepting people forcibly returned to Baghdad Airport and that the Iraqi government compensates deportees, providing them with work or unemployment benefit and supports them to rebuild their lives in Iraq and Kurdistan. The campaign has had widespread support both inside Iraq and across Europe.

Thursday night, supporters of the hunger strikers in Campsfield held a demonstration outside the detention centre.
In Iraqi Kurdistan, permission for a similar demonstration was refused today. Dashty Jamal says 'When European governments claim that Iraq is a free and democratic country it is a lie. Today the Kurdistan Regional Government denied permission for a demonstration against their deportation policy. By not giving IFIR permission to hold a peaceful demonstration, they have shown that there is no freedom of expression, no democracy in Iraq.'

Inside Campsfield, all the Iraqi hunger strikers refused to speak with a representative of the Iraqi government who arrived to make preparations for the deportation. All of them want to remain in Britain where they have family and friends and have built their lives. They are determined to have their demands met; 'if we don't get these decisions for us as humans and for our safety we will not eat until we die, rather than to be made to return to these war torn countries'.

Bill MacKeith of the Campaign to Close Campsfield said: 'During the demonstration this evening I talked with the partners of two of the hunger strikers. They had been visiting. From the details of their cases, it is clear that the government is trampling on the rights of individual rights in order to drive forward with a ruthless and unacceptable policy of mass deportations to Iraq, a country described by the United Nations as unsafe. Both the detainees concerned, on hunger strike in Campsfield, have partners of some standing and children in the UK. Where is the right to family life in this?

Gaddafi forces renew pounding of Misrata rebels

A renewed barrage of shelling by Libyan troops around Misrata has left about 17 dead and at least 60 wounded, according to hospital doctors in the rebel-held city.

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have been pounding Misrata throughout the day.
The city is the main rebel stronghold in western Libya, and has the country's largest port.
Witnesses report no activity in the area by Nato aircraft.

Tanks, artillery and incendiary rockets bombarded rebel positions at Dafniya, about 18 miles (30km) west of the city, said a doctor at Hikma Hospital in Misrata, speaking to Associated Press news agency.

Misrata has been the scene of some of the heaviest fighting of the Libyan unrest. It endured 70 days of siege by pro-Gaddafi forces until Nato air raids broke the siege three weeks ago, enabling the rebels to break out.

Government forces have pushed back against those territorial gains.

They surround Misrata on all sides but the north, where the Mediterranean Sea provides a vital conduit for supplies from the rebel-held east.

Meanwhile in Norway, military officials have announced their the country would scale down its fighter jet contribution to the Nato force flying above Libya, from six planes to four. It will withdraw completely from the Nato-led operation by August.

The alliance decided last week to extend the Libyan mission for 90 days, into late September.
Speaking shortly before the Norwegian announcement, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates strongly criticised some Nato allies, in his last major speech before he retires later this month.
Rape investigation

Mr Gates said operations in Libya and Afghanistan had exposed shortcomings in the military capability and political will of some members.

A senior United Nations official has said rape is still being used as a weapon of war in conflicts worldwide, including Libya.

Most perpetrators go unpunished as sexual violence thrives in a climate of impunity where victims are denied justice or reparations, said Margot Wallstrom, special representative of the UN Secretary General on sexual violence in conflict.

"Sexual violence has become a tactic of choice for armed groups, being cheaper, more destructive and easier to get away with than other methods of warfare," she told a news conference.
Earlier this week, the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor said he was reviewing evidence that Colonel Gaddafi ordered his troops to rape hundreds of women as a weapon against rebel forces.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo said rape was emerging as a new aspect of Col Gaddafi's repression.

PENTECOST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

DEFINATION OF PENTECOST?
Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated fifty days after Easter.

WHAT HAPPENED ON PENTECOST?
Ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus' mother and family, and many other of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover. While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by God through the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-29). The disciples were suddenly empowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen Christ. They went out into the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowds gathered for the festival. Not only did the disciples preach with boldness and vigor, but by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native languages of the people present, many who had come from all corners of the Roman Empire. This created a sensation. The apostle Peter seized the moment and addressed the crowd, preaching to them about Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. The result was that about three thousand converts were baptized that day. (You can read the Biblical account of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-41).

WHAT IS THE LITURGICAL COLOR FOR PENTECOST?
Red is the liturgical color for this day. Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost. The color red also reminds us of the blood of the martyrs. These are the believers of every generation who by the power of the Holy Spirit hold firm to the true faith even at the cost of their lives.

WHY IS PENTECOST SOMETIMES CALLED "WHITSUNDAY"?
A tradition of some churches in ancient times was to baptize adult converts to the faith on Pentecost. The newly baptized catechumens would wear white robes on that day, so Pentecost was often called "Whitsunday" or "White Sunday" after these white baptismal garments. Many Christian calendars, liturgies, and hymnals (particularly those from the Episcopal/Anglican tradition) still use this term.

WHY IS THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION OFTEN CELEBRATED ON PENTECOST?
Confirmation Sunday is the day when young people who have been instructed in basic Christian doctrine confess their faith in the presence of the church. The key to understanding confirmation is to recognize that the faith the confirmands confess is not of their own making; it is the gift of God that He gives through His means of grace. The Holy Spirit who empowered the disciples to preach the risen Christ two thousand years ago is the same Spirit who empowers the confirmands to make their confession. This is why many churches celebrate the rite of confirmation on Pentecost.

WHAT IS THE SEASON AFTER PENTECOST?
The season after Pentecost is centered on sanctification, the work of the Holy Spirit in the day to day life of the Christian. This is reflected in the liturgical color for this season: green, the color of life and growth. Through the gift of faith that comes only from the Holy Spirit working through the means of grace, Christians trust in Christ as Savior and proclaim Him in their daily lives by service to their neighbors. The season after Pentecost is the longest season of the church year -- it lasts from Trinity Sunday until the first Sunday of Advent. This is the non-festival portion of the liturgical calendar during which the church stresses vocation, evangelism, missions, stewardship, almsgiving, and other works of mercy and charity as ways in which Christ empowers us by His grace to share the Gospel with others.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE PENTECOST?
There are three "mega-festivals" commemorated in the Christian calendar. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are well known to both believers and non-believers. But it's possible that even liturgical Christians may not be as familiar with the third, the festival of Pentecost. God the Father's wonderful Christmas gift of His one and only Son, and Christ's Easter triumph over the power of sin, death, and the devil would be of no benefit to us if the Holy Spirit did not give us the gift of saving faith. Through the Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit gives us the faith to believe and trust in Christ as our Savior. This precious gift of faith in the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ is the reason Pentecost is the third "mega-festival" of the church and why we celebrate it with such joy and thanksgiving.

This is the Scandal of Tracy Morgan Triumph for Social Media

Everyone is rightly furious at Tracy Morgan over his homohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifphobic and sexist rant at his stand-up show last weekend. But he may have just helped prove Mark Zuckerberg’s thesis that Facebook makes the world a more open place.

What’s a Tweet worth? Are your Facebook “friends” really your friends?
The relative value of social media has been a topic of debate among culturalists since it first became clear that the novel new communication tool was here to stay, but grew especially heated in the wake of Iran’s 2009 uprising and then in this winter’s Middle East protests, both of which relied heavily on social media to mobilize.

On the one hand you have Malcolm Gladwell, perhaps the most famously outspoken social media skeptic, claiminghttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif that social media adds no real value to the world.

Gladwell even discounted the role Twitter and Facebook supposedly played in Iran and Egypt by citing the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and revolutions throughout history that initiated change without the use of technology. To Gladwell, social media activism is “weak tie” activism that increases the number of your connections by digitizing them, and therefore weakening them by necessity.

On the other hand, you had those social movements’ participants praising the technology’s role in their own efforts. When asked what was next for the region, Wael Ghonim, leader of Egypt’s protest movement, said, “Ask Facebook,” by which he meant, “Ask people like us, whttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifho mobilize via Facebook.”

Gladwell claims that social media activation is not “real,” but to the Egyptians who woke one morning to find Hosni Mubarak deposed and the national military pledging loyalty to Egypt’s citizens, it the results of their ‘Facebook revolution’ no doubt felt very real.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Last week Tracy Morgan performed a stand-up routine in which he went on a sexist and homophobic tirade, insisting that if his son were gay, he would stab him, and that women should be at home making food, not out becoming CEOs.

What’s more, he attacked the anti-bullying movement that sprung up last fall after several gay teens killed themselves over peer bullying abuse.

Thanks to a Facebook post by Kevin Rogers, who was in the audience when Morgan spurted his invective, the story has blown up into one of this week’s lead news stories—perhaps second only to Weinergate, another scandal ignited by social media.
Morgan has been shamed, and rightly so, by news outlets who have unequivocally condemned his attack. Before the advent of social media, this would only have become front-page news had Morgan’s tirade been filmed or otherwise documented, as seen in Michael Richards’ racist rant.

With the increased conversational chatter in the social media age, however, and the ascent of that chatter’s cultural influence, stories like Morgan’s can propagate.
When asked what his goal is for Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg once answered “to make the world a more open place.” No matter how alienating you find social media or how thin thin the value of its communications seem to you, you have to admit that the viral Facebook and Twitter memes—be it of Anthony Weiner’s weiner, a damning story about Tracy Morgan, or a campaign to overthrow a dictator—tend to be about truth, and tend to be positive.

The viral social media forces tend towards accountability. And to those in Egypt, or those offended by social stigma like those perpetuated by Morgan, the positive results feel quite real. This is perhaps the only positive slant on Morgan’s disgusting tirade. The outrage against him is helping prove Facebook, as Zuckerberg hoped, is helping make the world a more open place.
